DEFIANCE, Ohio — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting and hearing on July 17 to discuss a wastewater discharge permit application submitted by First Quality Tissue. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the City of Defiance Council Chambers, located at 631 Perry Street.
First Quality Tissue plans to construct a new facility at 12050 Ashwood Road in Defiance for the manufacturing of paper products. According to the Ohio EPA, the proposed facility would be permitted to discharge up to 4.8 million gallons per day of treated wastewater into the Maumee River.
As part of the permitting process, the proposed discharge is subject to an antidegradation review. This review evaluates alternatives to the discharge, assesses social and economic benefits, and ensures that water quality standards are maintained in the receiving stream.
During the hearing, Ohio EPA staff will present information about the proposal, answer questions, and accept public comments. Residents and interested stakeholders may also submit written comments via the agency’s Public Comment Form or by mail to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Attn: Permits Processing, PO Box 1049, Columbus, OH 43216-1049.
