PIKE COUNTY, OH - The Village of Beaver's community water system has resolved several violations identified by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, but two significant deficiencies related to facility maintenance remain outstanding.
In a letter dated May 30, 2025, the Ohio EPA acknowledged receipt of responses from the Village of Beaver regarding a March 8, 2023, Notice of Violation (NOV) that stemmed from a sanitary survey conducted in February 2023.
According to the letter, the Village of Beaver has successfully addressed four violations:
- Repairing the door to the chlorine room, ensuring proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
- Updating its contingency plan to include procedures for various emergencies, ranging from power failures to contamination of source water.
- Updating its asset management plan to demonstrate managerial, technical, and financial capability for long-term compliance.
- Completing a backflow resurvey to prevent potential cross-connections that could contaminate the public water system.
However, the Ohio EPA noted two violations that are still unresolved and require further action. The village has been granted an extension until July 1, 2025, to address these issues:
- The roof of the water treatment building is in poor condition and needs to be evaluated, then repaired or replaced based on the assessment.
- The exteriors of the water filters show extensive corrosion and must be repaired and repainted to prevent further deterioration.
The Ohio EPA emphasized that these outstanding violations will continue until properly resolved. The agency warned that failure to comply with state regulations could result in administrative or civil penalties of up to $25,000 per day for each violation. The village was urged to submit documentation confirming resolution by the specified due dates.
